3.2 The Rules of Lewton

While investigating a potentially habitable planet, both Koenig and Maya unknowingly pick berries and plants which results in a sentence from the Judges of Lewton.  They must engage in gladiatorial combat and kill three other aliens charged with the same crime in order to win their freedom.

Editor’s Note:
Now, it is well known that Rules of Lewton (in honour of Lew Grade) is not everyone’s favourite.  But with a little editing help it can become a nice action episode.  Also, since Maya has just recently joined the crew of Alpha I thought that having her behind a desk in the Command Center was too quick so here she simply joins John and Tony (whom we barely know at this point) on a survey mission.  Now this episode gives us more details about Maya’s past and her planet when she confides to John.  Originally, he was also talking about Earth’s past in a very emotional moment.  Unfortunately I had to remove his great scene because of the historical inconsistency with the chronology timetable of the series. It seems that producer Fred Freiberger mixed up the Star Trek bible with Space: 1999 in this one… this is not the only time that would occur.  A few special effects have been added and corrected such as the fact that the judges of Lewton are no longuer represented by three talking trees.  I think you may find this episode is more respectable and enjoyable after all.
